BY JAVIA HEADLEY, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS

The House Institute Foundation is at the forefront of hearing research, education, global health, and pediatric care, ensuring our advancements are accessible to clinicians worldwide. Our clinicians and researchers shared their research at various conferences in 2024, shaping the future of hearing healthcare through innovation and collaboration. In the spirit of founder Howard House’s timeless wisdom, “It does not help to develop new procedures unless we share.”

DRIVING REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS

At the House Institute Foundation, one main area of focus is “bench to bedside” research. Our researchers transform research findings into real-world clinical applications. Kelsey Klein, AuD, PhD, presented on children’s speech recognition in noisy environments at the American Auditory Society Conference. By focusing on improving communication outcomes for children with hearing loss, Dr. Klein is influencing how we approach treatment and therapy for these children. At the Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings, House Clinic Fellow Arminé Kocharyan, MD, presented on how cochlear implants affect blood flow and tissue health in the inner ear, including potential changes to the cochlea and immune system responses after implantation. At the same event, William Slattery, MD, discussed key research questions aimed at advancing treatment for sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

PIONEERING RESEARCH IN COCHLEAR IMPLANTS

John Galvin, PhD, has been a trailblazer in cochlear implant research, pushing the boundaries of understanding and innovation for more than two decades. At the Midwinter Meeting of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, he shared groundbreaking insights on how cochlear implant users can enhance their speech comprehension in noisy environments. At the 186th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and the World Congress of Audiology, Dr. Galvin unveiled findings on how individuals with cochlear implants experience music, shedding light on an often-overlooked aspect of auditory perception.

EXPERT INSIGHTS FOR PHYSICIANS

House Institute physicians are also shaping clinical practice. Steven Curry, MD, spoke on otology for internal medicine physicians at the American College of Physicians Internal Medicine Meeting. Kevin Peng, MD, covered complications of otologic surgery and skull base osteomyelitis at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, where John House, MD, provided insights into the evolving treatment of otosclerosis.

GLOBAL IMPACT ON HEARING HEALTH

Through these presentations, the House Institute Foundation continues to lead in hearing research and education.
By engaging with experts worldwide, we drive progress and ensure that the House Institute Foundation advancements reach those who need them most. Our mission remains steadfast: innovating hearing health through research, education, global health, and pediatric care, “so all may hear.”
